The purpose of this article is to present the results of the author’s analysis of the image of the Soviet Union in Yachina Guzel’s novel „Eshelon to Samarkand”. The analysis takes into account, among others, such details as architecture, the state of society (mental and physical), the perfor-mance of authorities and institutions, or the standard of living of citizens. In order to achieve the above-mentioned goal, the method of content analysis was used. The research shows that Yachina Guzel’s picture of the Soviet Union is very depressing and definitely critical. The state does not fulfill its basic functions. Infrastructure is destroyed, institutions do not function. The inhabitants are in a dramatic condition, both physically and mentally. Death, disease, hunger and demorali-zation rule the country.
