Title: Wsparcie społeczne i pedagogiczne rodzin i dzieci z autyzmem

Alternative title:

Social and pedagogical support for families and children with autism

Abstract:

Praca doktorska nosi tytuł „Wsparcie społeczne i pedagogiczne rodzin i dzieci z autyzmem”. Rozdział IV to założenia metodologiczne badań.

Autism is one of the most serious disorders in the development of a child that affects the whole family. Sooner or later the life of this social group is subordinated to the individual affected by disability. Undoubtedly, the situation of parents of children with autism is extremely difficult. They have to deal with the inability to communicate with their child, as well as the inability to develop proper relationships between them. Stress in parents also causes a disgraceful course of child development, where periods of improvement are intertwined with stagnation or regression. One of the factors that greatly disorganizes family life are the child's difficult behavior - they are contrary to accepted standards, and sometimes dangerous to the individual and the environment. They lead to the child being rejected by society. In addition, the lack of understanding and acceptance of the "otherness" of a child with autism means that his parents avoid contact with family, friends or neighbours. This situation often contributes to the withdrawal of a given social group from contacts with other people. What's more, it leads to exhaustion, lack of energy and resignation from taking any action by parents of a child with autism. The doctoral dissertation is entitled "Social and pedagogical support for families and children with autism". The main leading theories of work are: the theory of social support of Stanisław Kawula, who perceives them as a special type and way of helping people in a difficult situation, primarily to mobilize their strength and resources to deal with their own problems, and the theory of trajectory of Anselm's disease Staussa, where chronic somatic disease is identified with a trajectory introducing chaos and disorganization into everyday life. The aim of this study was to answer the question: what social and pedagogical support do families and children with autism receive in the living environment. The study covered families with autistic children living in selected cities of the Świętokrzyskie Province, as well as specialists working with children with disabilities.
Chapter 1 of the theoretical part presents the definition of autism according to various authors, its etiology, classification, as well as characteristic symptoms. The subject of the analysis was also the characteristics of children struggling with this disorder. The next chapter shows social and pedagogical support as the main factors conditioning the proper functioning of a family with a child with autism. It explains the concept of support, presents its classification and sources. The importance of support for the family of an autistic child has been analyzed. The author presented revalidation as one of the forms of therapy, where some of the methods of working with a child with the disorder were discussed. Chapter III is dedicated to showing the family as a social group that plays an extremely important role in society. The concept of a family was explained, its most important functions were presented, and a family with an autistic child was characterized. The author analyzed the research carried out so far in the field of social and pedagogical support for families and children with autism. Chapter IV is the methodological assumptions of the research. The study covered parents of children with autism and specialists working with a given social group. The type of quantitative and qualitative research was used. The last chapter of the doctoral dissertation is the analysis of the results of conducted research, followed by a summary and conclusions as well as a bibliography and an annex. The research showed that families with children with autism do not receive support adequate to their needs. Often they can only count on help from their immediate family. The author, presenting the research results, answers the research problems and verifies hypotheses, but also looks for solutions that would bring positive changes in the functioning of families with children with autism. The doctoral dissertation supplements the theoretical knowledge in the field of social and pedagogical support for families and children with autism, but it is also an attempt to answer the question: how to help the studied social group or how to modify assistance work to make it more effective.
