Abstract:

The phenomenon of punishing the youngest has been known since the dawn of time. It is firmly embedded in the cultural conditioning of the educational process. In the past, it served as an effective tool for controlling and eliminating undesirable behaviour in the youngest. The proverbial smack was generally interpreted as an innocent educational method. Today, attitudes to the use of punishment have changed dramatically. Physical punishment of children is negated, emphasising the educational helplessness of those who punish in this way. However, in the opinion of many parents, the belief that punishment is an indispensable part of raising a child still persists. The main objective of the study was to find out the contemporary attitudes of adolescents to the issue of punishment of children. The authors wanted to obtain information from respondents who are just entering adulthood and may realise their role as parents in the future. The study employed a diagnostic survey method using a questionnaire technique. A research tool, the adolescent survey questionnaire, was developed for the study. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test. In the course of the research process, it was found that adolescents allow the use of punishment in parenting primarily in situations where the child behaves inappropriately towards the parents and goes against the arrangements and breaks the rules. The majority of respondents declare a constructive approach to the child’s methods of punishment – explaining and clarifying to the child what the inappropriate behaviour is.
