Even though all fighting armies committed violence against Jews and anti\-Semitism had been already present in Galicia, the Russian policy of ruthless persecution of Jews in Galician territory was completely new and unique in its scale and scope of activities undertaken by Russian military and civil authorities. Consequently, it came as a shock to local communities, accustomed to peaceful coexistence during the Habsburg rule. Moreover, the deportations of the Jewish population from Galicia into the interior of the Romanovs’ state took on a massive scale. In the article, the author tried to present all aspects of the policy of Jewish persecution followed by the Russian state and its army. At that time, Russians questioned the existing social and legal order by demonstrating that the Jewish population could be excluded from the generally accepted norms of conduct and state law. In the following years, the Jews were regarded by the anti\-Semitic part of the society as symbols of war’s monstrosities, thieves’ profit, efforts to avoid the duty to the motherland and abuses of the welfare system. In the conditions of growing pauperisation of society and depravity caused by the protracted war, the increasingly brutal attacks against Jews carried out by their Polish and Ukrainian neighbours were on the rise."]
