Abstract:

This book concerns one of the most important source texts from 17th century England – the Diary of Samuel Pepys. The Diary is a record of the author’s life from 1660-1669 and covers such important events for the history of London and England as the Restoration of Charles II Stuart after the period of the Civil War and the protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, the war with the Netherlands, the plague of 1665, or the Great Fire of London in 1666. Pepys’s Diary, however, is not only an account of a witness of political and social events happening in Stuart England but also an extremely colourful illustration of the culinary habits and traditions of Pepys’s contemporaries. The author’s main purpose was to show the culinary aspect of Pepys’s Diary from three perspectives. The first chapter is an attempt to present Pepys’s work as a peculiar compendium of knowledge about the English culinary tradition, its richness and diversity. The second chapter of the work is an analysis Pepys’s Diary in the context of the relationship between the development of his professional career and the evolution of the culinary and social sphere of his life. The third perspective contained in this book is an attempt to understand Pepys’s individual approach to the activity of eating and drinking as an escapist philosophy which helps to forget about the difficult and dangerous reality in which the author of the Diary lived.
